I was ravenous with a couple of friends when we were wandering around on a late Saturday afternoon. We stopped into Chabaa honestly because it was open and we were just planning to go into something that looked good. Glad it turned out to be Chabaa! It's an interestingly laid out restaurant... there's a long hallway in the front entrance that leads into the main dining area, less than 10 tables available for small group seating. We were the only ones in the restaurant but as we were eating, the restaurant filled and by the time we left there was a wait. As I said I was ravenous so I ordered chicken satay and tofu pad thai all for myself. No shame. I almost ate every bit of it, it was really good! The pad thai portion was very generous and just a note the chicken pad thai also comes with some tofu in it! The chicken satay was also done very well with the classic sauces also hitting the spot! Service and food wait time were also pretty good! Expect typical SF Thai food prices. I would recommend Chabaa! Since it's in Union Square, I bet it does get pretty busy and touristy so there's your warning!

Duck fried rice that was super greasy and had fatty chunks of duck in it. The service is super slow and at times not very friendly, it took forever to get water, and even longer to provide me with silverware and a napkin. With tax and tip it was almost $20 for a small plate of duck fried rice. Judging by the fact that I can get a whole duck for about $13 this small plate of rice with fatty duck definitely wasn't worth it. The rice was dry, wasn't flavorful, and the duck tasted old.

Stopped here for dinner one night when I was in town for work. This spot was right across from the hotel I was staying at. It's a super tiny place with only maybe 10 tables inside. I was waiting to pick up my to go order and kept feeling like there was no good place to stand. I ordered the guay tiew noodles, which were the wide rice noodles with fish cake and ground chicken. The flavors were kind of all over the place for me and I just didn't love it. I'd had something like this dish once before in LA and had really enjoyed it but was pretty disappointed here.

Everywhere I go I always look for Asian food! Found this little spot on Geary in San Francisco. It's quite tiny (a hole in a wall) but you don't have to wait to be seated. Place is clean, service is fast and friendly. No private parking and you gotta look for parking space so it's best to walk or carpool :) if in the area. The food is good nothing special I could really write about. The good thing is, the taste is not too different from other Thai food that I've tasted. So if you want Thai food, this is ok. We had the crab fried rice, it had chunks of crab but the aroma was a bit fishy for me, tasted good though.

The neighborhood Thai restaurant is a mainstay of living in SF. When I first moved in the city, Tom Kha Gai and Pad Thai were their own food group. Every section of the city has one or two inexpensive places where you can get flavorful Thai food and Chabaa is such a place on Geary across the street from the Curran and ACT. I've come here a few times now - they are really good for a quick dinner pre-show and there can be a reasonably long line of folks here since it's close to a touristy area. The food is solid. I came here recently for lunch and had the Hol Jor (deep fried stuffed bean curd paper) and the Guay Tiew Lord (basically seafood with ground chicken over flat rice noodles). Portion size is huge (had enough leftover for dinner). Service is surprisingly good for an ethnic place and can't beat the price here (Under $20). It's a good neighborhood spot and I wouldn't hesitate coming here.
